Meet the new blog…

We used to have a blog. It kind of got wiped out when we went from being piazzza.com to being piazza.com.

Oops.

Anyway, we like the opportunity for a fresh start. So let’s start by saying what kind of things we want to do with this blog, in case we can convince someone, somewhere to put us in the feedreader after a single post. (Hi mom!)

One thing we want to do is talk about how people are using Piazza. We talk to users almost every day, and we hear lots of interesting ways that people are using the product, including things we’d never even dreamed of. We want to share some of that knowledge, and that excitement, with you our gentle readers.

A second thing we want to do is share what we’re doing to make the product better. We push a lot changes out to the site, some small and some large. We don’t do big launch events around here, other than we sometimes go out for dinner after a big project is done. So unless you frequent restaurants within five blocks of our office, you might not even know about the features. So we will blog them.

Third, we want to share any interesting data that can shed light on what works and what doesn’t work in education. We’ve got a lot of people using Piazza, and so it’s like a giant experiment that may yield some interesting results. Or not. We don’t know yet, but we think it will. (And could the OKCupid people have possibly known at the beginning that the most important question on a first date is, “Do you like the taste of beer?“)

Fourth, we want to tell you what it’s really like to work at Piazza, lest you entertain some desire to join our team. Needless to say, we will not show pictures of people hunched over their keyboards for hours on end, because no one wants to look at that. And it’s kind of assumed. But occasionally we’ll give you a glimpse of the more interesting aspects of the life of a company before it can actually afford real cubicles.

Fifth, if something really interesting happens in technology or education or in the news generally, and we think we might have something original to say about it, we’ll put that here. Otherwise, we’ll link to other people who write better and faster than we do. Perhaps they’ll reciprocate one day.

Finally, and most importantly, we want to be as transparent an organization as we can possibly be. Piazza is a work in progress. We are all works in progress. We will mess up from time to time. And we’re hoping that if people know us better, they’ll give us the benefit of the doubt. Or at least, they’ll forgive us faster. Either way — and if no one else ever reads this thing — we’ll be able to look back and think, “Oh. That’s what we were thinking.”
